We may be getting close to the end of term but there is still a lot going on in school.
This week, in Reception the children have been reading the book ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson.

In maths this week, Year One have been learning a variety of vocabulary associated with time. They have also learnt to tell the time on an analogue clock for o’clock and half past times. The children created their own version of Awongalema, in their English sessions, and then shared it with a partner using prosody. During science, the children looked at the different parts of plants humans eat and talked about what plants they have eaten. As a group, they looked closely at different edible plants and sorted them into roots, stems, leaves, fruits, flowers and seeds. They planed their pancakes in DT, ready to make (and taste!) them next week.
In Year Two, this week the highlight has been their trip to the beach at Broadstairs. The sun shone and everyone had lovely time. As well as being a lovely end to Year 2, this trip is also an opportunity for the children to bring to life their classroom learning all about ‘seasides’. You can read more about their trip here:

This week, Year Three have been publishing their Edward Tulane diary entries. In maths, the children have been identifying 2D and 3D shapes by their properties. In science, the children have made predictions for their experiment demonstrating how plants transport water from their roots to the rest of the plant. In computing, the children have been using spreadsheets to calculate their budget when spending for a party. They also had time to meet their new classmates this week.
Year Four have had a busy week leading up to the excitement of Camp Atwood. As we go to press, the children are on the field and in the tents working their way through a range of activities. They have been in Forest School whittling willow to make flagpoles and pounding flowers to make their flags. They have been decorating rocks and making picture frames from sticks. They have also been on a treasure hunt. Let’s hope they are all tired out and fall straight to sleep when ‘lights out’ arrives.
This week, Year Five have been using their DT skills to build bridges. The children have been sawing and gluing to turn their designs and visions in to reality. There have been some very impressive examples with some intricate moving parts. They have also written their own poetry based on Benjamin Zephaniah’s ‘The British’. The children wrote a recipe poem using all the ingredients that go towards making them who they are. In maths, the children have been learning about volume and capacity.
This week, Year Six have been preparing for their leavers’ assembly. They have been writing their reflections of their time at Atwood and also thinking about what they learnt on their transition days at secondary school. They also had a visit from the Community Policing team this week. They spoke to the children about how to keep themselves safe on their way to and from secondary school as they start to build their independence.
FOAP
A huge thank you to all the parents and volunteers who have supported FOAP over the course of the summer term. Altogether, through various activities such as discos, Mother and Father’s Day sales, the summer fair, the Kidspace event and the uniform sales, FOAP has raised £7300 this term. This money will go towards the library refurbishment taking place over the summer.
More Fundraising
Many thanks to everyone who attended the fundraising event last Friday after school. This event raised an impressive £2000 for the school’s chosen charities, Kids with Cancer and the AT society. Many thanks to all the pupils who volunteered their time to help out and to Miss Carlucci for putting the event together.
And finally…
Well done to all the children who took part in the Whitgift Invitational Swimming Gala today. The children put in a series of excellent performances and managed to tie for first place with Whyteleafe School. Many thanks to Mrs Bayliss for organising and to all the staff and parents who helped with transport and the event itself.
