ATW EYFS news – Gruffalos and Gingerbread men

A return to the frosty weather has meant more ice exploration in the Early Years, and lots of moving around to keep warm whilst outside!

In Reception we have been looking at the Gruffalo as part of our ‘Watch out – there’s a monster about!’ The children have been learning about the characters and ordering the key events of the story. They have been very creative and have made many of the characters, including clay Gruffalos and paper plate foxes.

In mathematics we have been learning one more than a number and exploring how towers of sequential numbers make staircases as each number is one more. The children have enjoyed playing track and number games outdoors, continuing their learning from the previous week.

This week nursery’s focus sound has been ‘D’, we have also been practising our oral blending and what initial sound we can hear in words.

We have been reading ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and had fun making actions for the characters, which helped us to memorise the story. Using our actions from the story we have been able to complete a story map about The Gingerbread Man and the characters he met along the way. We have also been working on our fine motor skills, using scissors to carefully cut out a Gingerbread man and to stick his body parts on in the correct places.
