This year, the theme for National Poetry Day was ‘wonder’. We launched the day by watching some inspirational videos of young laureates from all over UK sharing their poems inspired by that theme. Following that immersion, we studied the poem ‘Six ways of looking at a leaf’ by Kate Wakeling. We practised retelling it first in small groups, then as a class. Filled with that spirit of wonder, we walked through our beautiful grounds and each of us collected one leaf. We captured this experience, by writing our own personal verse about that leaf and compiled individual verses to create a collective poem. In the afternoon, we went outside again to make some leaf rubbings using crayons. We used these to embellish our poems.
We hope you will enjoy the final outcome!
