This week in Reception, the children continued exploring our exciting topic, ‘Beastly Beasties’, with a focus on the wonderful story Aghhh, Spider! by Lydia Monks.
After listening to the story, the children had some thoughtful discussions about how the humans treated the spider and reflected on how important it is to show kindness and respect to others. The children talked about ways they can be kinder in their own lives and celebrated what makes each of them special.
Inspired by the spider recognising all of the things he was good at, the children spent time thinking about their own strengths and talents. They created beautiful celebration rosettes to recognise what they are proud of and all the wonderful things they can do.
The children also became mini-beast experts by learning fascinating facts about spiders. They recalled their learning and created their own fact sheets, sharing information about spider features, habitats and behaviours.
From our previous ‘To the Rescue!’ topic, the children were very excited to welcome back the fire engine and firefighter crew after their original visit had been unexpectedly cut short due to a real emergency call-out. This time, the children had the opportunity to learn all about life as a firefighter and the incredibly important work they do to help keep people safe. One of the highlights of the visit was getting to use the fire hose to spray water across the quiet playground—there were lots of excited smiles!
To finish the week, the children took part in our fantastic EYFS Sports Funday. Everyone had a brilliant time enjoying the bouncy castle, kindly paid for by FOAP—thank you for your support! The children also showed great determination and enthusiasm as they took part in races they had been practising, including the egg and spoon race and sack race.
A huge thank you to all of the adults who came along to cheer the children on and celebrate their achievements. What a busy and exciting week in Reception!
