This week Reception are immersing themselves in the traditional tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk,” so we have also been planting runner bean seeds as well as sunflowers, cress and sweet peas. We had some expert help from gardener, Owen, also known as Ronnie’s Dad. All three classes were lucky enough to have Owen visit their classroom, where he explained each step needed to plant our seeds successfully. Owen also introduced us to lots of new vocabulary, such as, roots, shoots and germination. We looked at onion seedlings and learnt how the roots suck up water and nutrients just like a sponge to help them grow strong. We have already had great success growing our cress mountain and are hopeful our beans will grow into beanstalks tall enough to reach the Giant! Owen has paved the way to help us write instructions about how to plant seeds and identify what they need to grow. He also led to lots of construction in our outside area to build the tallest beanstalk with the strongest roots!
