It has been a busy final week to finish the term. We started the week in our funky socks and with a visit from the local church to tell us about the Easter story and we finished it with a Gold Award Assembly celebrating children who really add to our school community. In between, we squeezed in lots of learning and had loads of fun with our carousel of maths activities as part of our Maths week celebrations
The Nursery have been learning all about Easter and planting seeds.

This Week Year 1 have been finishing off their chalk stories. They came up with something they could draw to deal with the story’s problem and wrote inventive sentences. In maths, they have been measuring mass and volume. Year One used balance scales to compare the weight of different objects and used cubes to measure their weights. They also used the water trays to make containers full, half full and empty. In science, Year One looked at the changes that have occurred in the local area now that it is Spring and recorded their observations in a table. Year One also learnt about the story of Easter and wrote about it. They also found out how Christians celebrate Easter and made their own Easter cards to take home.
This week, Year 2 finished off the week with an exciting visit to London. They visited St Paul’s cathedral to take part in a workshop. They also saw the Monument, visited Pudding Lane and looked at other London landmarks linked to their Thematic topic. This tip will also bring to life many of the sights that the children have been writing about in their nonfiction booklets. In maths, the children have been learning to subtract with exchanging tens and applying this to word problems.
This week, Year 3 have been writing a descriptive paragraph all about woolly mammoths. They have been learning how to include fronted adverbials, passive apostrophes and adjectives for effect. In maths, the children have been looking at unit fractions. In RE, they finished the week with an interesting workshop looking at Humanism and thinking about what it means to be a good human and how you might contribute to the world. They finished the week by crafting Easter bunnies and chicks.
In Year 4 this week, the children published their campaigns about saving endangered animals. They included why the animal chosen is so amazing, why they are endangered and how people can help them! With children making impassioned pleas to save orangutans, tigers, gorillas and many more, the standard of writing has been excellent. In whole class reading the children have been reading ‘Rumaysa’, an alternative version of the traditional fairytale of ‘Rapunzel’. In thematic, the children have identified features of an Anglo-Saxon village and understood why they were important for a settlement. We also designed our own settlements!
This week, Year 5 have been focusing in English on creating dialogue between two characters. They have had a drama lesson where they acted as characters from The Highwayman and then used this to inspire a paragraph for their narrative. In maths, they have been learning how to multiply fractions by whole numbers. In our thematic learning, we have learnt about the punishment of transportation to Australia and have begun to discuss whether we think this was an appropriate and fair consequence for criminals.
In English, Year 6 have been publishing their monologues in the role of Lady Macbeth. They have been urging Macbeth to seize the throne of Scotland by committing a dastardly deed. The characterization of Lady Macbeth has been impressive. The children have also been busy polishing up their comprehension by making a point and supporting it with evidence when answering questions. In maths, the children have learnt how to fins and average by calculating the mean.
Maths Week
On Wednesday the children had an engaging assembly focusing on Maths. Mrs Daulton-Swift highlighted that really, whatever job you do, you are likely to need to know some maths to be a success- even if it just being able to check your payslip! On Thursday, the children throughout the school were so excited to discover that Maths is Fun! During the morning, the children rotated around different classrooms where they were faced with mathematical puzzles and challenges. The children really enjoyed working with other teachers as well as testing their maths skills. The quizzes tested their knowledge of shales and patterns, their building skills as well as their number skills. Today, we celebrated children who have been busy on Times Tables Rock Stars or Numbots this week. Well done to Amber class who were our top scoring class.
Gold Award
In our Gold Award assembly today, we spoke about what it means to be part of a community, be it a class community, our school or the wider community. We celebrated children who bring something positive to their community every day. Whether that is being kind to friends, helping out with jobs or being a positive influence in the classroom, it was lovely to hear about so many children who make a difference to their community every day.
Parking
Once again, please can I ask that people are respectful of our neighbours when parking to drop off children at school. I have been sent a number of photos of cars parked across people’s driveways. Rather than spend time trying to track down the culprits, it would be easier if people were to park properly in the first place. Thank you for your cooperation.
Lost Property
Many of you will have noticed the HUGE pile of lost property that we have accumulated over the course of the term. The fact is that all of these items of clothes must belong to someone because they weren’t here at the beginning of term. At the end of the day today, any items in good condition will be kept for resale while all others will be recycled or scrapped. Please have a look and take anything that belongs to you. Please can I also ask that people take the time over the holiday to name any uniform that the children will be wearing in the summer term. This makes it so much easier to return it to you, thereby keeping costs down for you.
And finally…Happy Easter!
I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a restful Easter break. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for the summer term.
