This half term, Reception have been learning about the ‘People who help us’ in our community. Last week, we had a very excited visit from our local fire station. The Norbury fire fighter team came to visit Ecclesbourne to talk about the amazing work they do to keep us safe. The fire fighters told us all about how to keep safe at home and what to do if there was fire. One of the fire fighters talked us through the importance of their uniform. We learnt that they have a torch in their hat to see when it is dark and saw how they breathe using a mask when they are surrounded by smoke. The fire fighter told us that they must check their boots everyday to make sure they are working. Some of us got to test the boots out by jumping on the boots as hard as we could – luckily the boots were working and the fire fighter didn’t feel a thing.
Next we learnt all about the special cutters that they use to cut open cars when saving people. We had so much fun having a go at opening and closing them. We asked lots of great questions during the visit such as ‘how long does it take to get to a fire?’ and ‘how long does it take to get ready and out into the fire engine?’ But the best part of the visit was getting a chance to squirt water from the fire hose. All the children really enjoyed squirting the water as far and as tall as they could, we even saw some rainbows through the water.
A huge thank you to Norbury Fire Station for coming to visit us!
