Atwood Newsletter 30th January 2026

This week, we have started to see preparations ramping up for Museum Day.  The saws and glue guns have been out and various models and projects are being constructed.  We look forward to welcoming you in to school to see the finished articles next week.

As a further note on Museum Day, some of you will remember from last year that the first rush of visitors was a very busy time.  However, the museum is open until 10.15am so if you are able to stagger your entrance and come back a little bit later you might find the corridors a little less crowded.

For the past two weeks, the Nursery children have been building their knowledge of much- loved tales.

In Reception, the children have been thinking about how they could care for a Bog baby and creating their own habitats:

This week Year 1 wrote instructions about how to make a cup and ball toy. They rehearsed their instructions with actions. In their writing, they made sure to include features of instructions, including numbered steps and imperative verbs. In maths they have been adding and subtracting with numbers up to twenty, using a variety of equipment. Year One investigated the classroom and outside area to determine what materials the equipment and resources were made from. They also painted their drawings of their toy, mixing the colours using white and black paint. Finally, in order to get ready for Museum Day they designed their own toy to be made from recycled materials, making sure to list the resources they would need to make it next week.

This week Year 2  have published their own versions of Little Red Riding Hood where they changed the wolf to a different animal and had to think carefully about how that would change the story when Little Red arrives at Granny’s house. In maths the children have been learning about division and are beginning to understand that division is the inverse of multiplication.  In their thematic work the children have been making front covers for their folders and learning about why The Great Fire of London spread so quickly. In PE the children have been developing their dodgeball skills while practising to block the ball.

Year 3 have had a busy week.  In English the children have been publishing their fables based on the Hare and the Tortoise. In maths, the children have finished learning about money and starting think about repeated addition of 3s, 4s  and 8s linked to times tables.  In whole class reading the children enjoying ‘The Boy who grew Dragons’ and in PE the children have been developing their dribbling, shooting and passing skills in hockey.

In Year 4, the children have written their eye-witness accounts to complete their story of ‘Escape from Pompeii’.  The children included adventurous vocabulary and subordinate clauses to grasp what it would have been like to witness the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD.  Year 3 have now started a new poetry unit looking at the poem ‘Cat Rap’ by Grace Nichols.  In thematic, the children have learned about Lucius Septimius Severus, a black emperor who had a successful rule of the Roman Empire.  The children have also learned about what the Romans brought to Britain and how this has changed our life today.

This week, Year 5 have had a great week full of lots of different activities! The children investigated cam mechanisms in DT and then designed and created their own moving toy.  During their two days at Whitgift, the children had the opportunity to take part in fencing, mandarin lessons, coding lessons or music lessons depending on their class.  They also used Lego to create their own ‘stop motion animation’ videos which were amazing!  The children were excellent ambassadors for Atwood and showed great enthusiasm for each new activity they tried.  Year 5 have now started a new book in English called ‘The Great Kapok Tree.  Through this, they will be exploring the negative impact of deforestation and producing their own persuasive writing.

Year 6 have had a very creative week.  They thought carefully about their own designs for their Egyptian death masks and then have been patiently putting their plans into action to make their masks.  This involves cutting, soaking and building up layers of Modroc and shaping them into the features of the face. Details and decorations are then added.  The children have also been learning about the properties of 3d shapes and scale and proportion.  In English the children have started looking at how to build a narrative and in science the children have been finding out about the classification of living things into different categories.
