ATW Nursery News – 16th January

We continued reading the story ‘Gingerbread Man’ this week. In our carpet sessions, we created actions for each character and parts of the story. We then acted the story out as a whole class. We definitely have some future superstar performers in our mix! The children now know the story really well and are very confident in their own abilities to retell it to each other. In expressive art and design, the children worked collaboratively to make giant gingerbread men for our wall by drawing around each other. We also thought of alternative ways we could help the gingerbread man get across the river. Some children suggested boats, which led us to making our own boats and testing if they would float! On Friday, we made our own real life gingerbread men. We followed step by step instructions and watched very closely to make sure none ran away. We then got to decorate and eat them (and they were very yummy too!!).

In maths, we have been learning about length and introduced the key vocabulary of: short, long, shorter, longer, shortest and longest. We have used lots of different objects to compare lengths including; string, lines of children, train tracks and cubes. Outside, we drew lines on the floor and walls to measure the different lengths of our building blocks. We have encouraged the children to use the key words when describing the lengths both during lesson time and in their play. It was great to hear the children use the vocabulary “this line is short”, “this train track is the longest” and “this carrot is longer than this one”.
