ATW Reception News – Buses, feelings and book writing

It has been another busy week in Reception.  The children continued looking at the story “Naughty Bus” by Jan and Jerry Oke with their learning extended by creating a version of the book. The children were taught how to use the iPads to take photos of a toy bus in various locations around the Reception setting. They orally practiced their sentences to describe where the bus was in their picture. They then used their developing phonics knowledge to write a caption to accompany their photo. All of the children’s work was then collated into a class book which they enjoyed reading to themselves in the book corner. I think you’ll agree that they have done an amazing job considering they have only been in school for 49 days!

Across the Pegasus Trust, the children learn about building learning dispositions to help them achieve their full potential. The first step in developing a positive attitude towards learning is being able to regulate yourself.  In order to do this, you need to first be able to identify what it is that you are feeling and why.  The children learned about emotions this week, developing their vocabulary around this and beginning to be able to identify when they are feeling different things.

In phonics this week the children learned the sounds v, w, x and y.  They also learned the tricky words ‘and’, ‘has’, ‘his’ and ‘her’.

In Mathematics the children have continued learning about the composition of number.  They have looked at how the numbers within five can be made in different ways e.g. four can be made by 2 and 2, 3 and 1, 4 and 0, 1 and 1 and 1 and 1, 2 and 1 and 1 etc.

All of the children enjoyed playing in the snow on Wednesday.  Yellow class enjoyed making leaf accessories this week in the woodland learning session.
