Phonics:
Our initial sound in phonics this week has been ‘Z’. While playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children could identify the words zebra, zip and zoo all began with the initial sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’. We looked at blending phonemes to make the words, zoo and zip. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table beginning with the initial sound.
Literacy:
This week, our new text was introduced. We have been looking at ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ by Giles Andreae. To begin, the children were reminded about the fish they previously made when reading our story ‘The River’ and other sea creatures whose names they may know. Some answers included: crabs, sharks and octopuses . Children observed real-life images of sea animals on our Understanding the World table, examining the differences and similarities between them. Once we started to look at our book, it was explained that this was not a story, but instead a book full of poems. One child pointed out it was a non-fiction book too. Every day, we have been looking at the poems, reading one at a time, making actions too, such as wobbly arms like an octopus. To conclude this week, the children were also informed that some poems rhyme and they were reminded about how to identify a rhyming word with one child explaining, “They sound the same at the end.”
Maths:
Our maths carpet sessions this week have seen us introduce number consolidation. Our first lesson was a visit to space where we could see stars, aliens, planets and rockets. The children were asked to collect a particular number of items, counting out and recognising the value of number whilst doing so. The next session was completing maths problems. Our spaceship only had 2 chairs and 5 astronauts, what do we need to do? Our 4 astronauts only had 1 helmet available and our moon could only hold 2 space buggies but there were 4! One at a time, the children successfully completed our math problems. Our last session ended by drawing our rockets using shapes you might find around the room.
Enhanced provision:
EYFS Fun day!
Wow, what a glorious day it has been with all our families invited to join us. There have been lots of activities for our families to engage in, picnics shared and ice lollies to cool us down and finally, a bouncy castle!! A big thank you to FOAP for providing the best bouncy castle as always and a big thank you to our families for supporting where needed.
Forest School:
Forest school has been a saving grace this week, providing an area which is shaded and a great place to escape to when it’s been too hot. The children have enjoyed creating leaf people with a variety of leaves and having fun enjoying the time with the kitchen and puddles.
Child’s voice:
‘This week I have enjoyed’…
