ATW Newsletter 6th June 2025

The children have returned from their break refreshed and raring to go.  All of the children have launched straight back in to their learning in a packed week.

In Nursery, this week the children have been learning about rivers and sequencing.  You can read more here:

This week, in Reception the children have been learning about minibeasts.  They have also been subitizing and in the woods whittling.  Find out more here:

In Year One this week, the children have enjoyed painting and decorating our African masks.  When they had finished their mask, they evaluated it.  During maths, the children continued to count in 5s and represented the multiples as arrays.  They have been learning many new and exciting facts about lions in English.  This week, the focus has been on ‘what lions look like’.  Did you know lions have sharp teeth and strong jaws for eating?  In history lessons, the children have learnt about the life of Nelson Mandela and created a poster (as a group) to present the facts they had found out.  Using their knowledge of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, the children compared different animals in science.

In Year Two, the children have been reading The Secret of Black Rock.  The children ae now creating their own characters for their won versions of the story.  In maths the children were learning about capacity and measuring using millimetres.  The children made various coloured potions and then mixed quantities using specific amounts.  They had to read the scales very carefully to get accurate measurements.  In science, the children have learning all about animals and their habitats and they discovered some fantastic facts about the octopuses.  Finally, the children have been busy designing their own animal puppets which they will make later in the term.

This week, Year Three in English have been writing settings for their own stories based on the magical book Leon and the place between by Grahame baker-Smith.  In maths the children have been converting measures working between millimetres, centimetres and metres. In RE the children have been studying the features of a Buddhist Temple then designing their own and in their scientific study of plants the children have learnt all about George Washington- Carver. Known as ‘The Peanut Man’, this agricultural scientist discovered and invented over 300 uses for peanuts in products ranging from lotions and soups to gasoline

Year Four have been studying the text, Once Upon a Wild Wood by Chris Riddell and have started creating their own fairy stories using the book as a source of inspiration.  In Maths the children have been telling the time to the nearest minute.  In Art as part of their enrichment, Indigo class have been learning about Gustav Klimt and is their thematic work the children have been designing Anglo Saxon jewellery which they will make out of clay.

This week, Year Five have been wowed in The Wonderdome.  On Monday, a blow-up planetarium landed in school and the children learnt a huge range of fascinating facts about our solar system, whilst gazing at the stars, planets and galaxies. The children have started reading High Rise Mystery by Sharna Jackson and will be using it as an inspiration for writing newspaper reports. The children are also reading C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. In maths the children have been measuring and calculating the perimeter of shapes and in their thematic work as part of their geography they have been locating different biomes in Australia.

This week, Year Six have been publishing their survival guides giving top tips on how to survive in the wild.  Containing information about foraging for food, making a fire and building a shelter, these handy information booklets are an invaluable source of information for anyone planning to go out into the forest.  The children have also been auditioning for their end of year production and started rehearsing.

 Lost Property

Despite only being back in school for a week, we have accumulated a vast amount of lost property as children take off their layers and leave them around the school.  Please can I encourage everyone to spend 10 minutes this weekend making sure that all items coming in to school are clearly labelled so that we can return lost items to their rightful owners.  Unfortunately, when children tell us they’ve lost their jumper but they know that it is blue that’s not enough information to help us find it.

British Summer Time

As much as I wish that we could guarantee blue skies and sunshine now that it is summer, we all know that unfortunately the weather is unpredictable.  Please can children be reminded to bring coats to school when the weather is unsettled because at playtimes and breaktimes we like to get the children outside for some fresh air even if it is drizzly or raining a little bit.

Birthday treats

Please remember that children are not allowed to bring sweets or food treats in to school to share for their birthdays. We understand that many children would like to celebrate their birthdays with their classmates but unfortunately, we must be mindful of children’s dietary requirements and allergies. If you would like to provide the class with a small gesture to celebrate, children are welcome to bring in a pencil or similar. Alternatively, if you would like to donate a book the teacher will read it with the class at the end of the day.  The website has details of our reading spine recommended reads if you are short of ideas.

And finally…

Many thanks to FOAP and all the wonderful volunteers who are helping with the school disco today.  The children have barely been able to contain their excitement through the day and I’m sure they will have a lovely time.
