On Wednesday, the Year 6 children from Atwood took a trip to the Natural History Museum as part of their learning about evolution and inheritance. The bus, train and tube journey on the way there went smoothly and as we stepped out at South Kensington we were impressed by the gardens in the museum grounds. Once inside, we visited the dinosaurs section and the mammal exhibits. We learnt that the fossil record helps us to understand how animals can change and adapt over time in a process called evolution. We had a workshop where a very knowledgeable presenter explained that as well as studying fossils, scientists from the museum are still studying evolution today. She told us all about researchers studying anolis lizards in the Turks and Caicos Islands and how they have recorded changes in the lizard population as they adapt their feet in response to changes in the climate. After that, we managed to squeeze in a visit to the human evolution exhibition where we were able to look at lots of different skulls. All in all, we had a really good day out where we learnt lots to support our learning in school. Many thanks to all the parents who helped out with the trip.
