What better way to teach the Year 6 science topic of ‘evolution and adaptation’ than by having Ms Whitfield bring in Boyce, her pet tortoise, so that the children could see first hand how well adapted tortoises are. Did you know that all tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises? Staff have known Boyce since Ms Whitfield first got him several years ago and he was just about the size of a satsuma. He’s certainly grown on his diet of fresh leaves and, with a life-span between 80-150 years, will be chomping on fruit and flowers for a long time to come. Children in Year 6 had the chance to feed him some of his favourite snacks (suitably protected in rubber gloves) and he seemed very pleased by all the attention.
