As part of our thematic learning, Year 6 have been studying the Ancient Egyptian irrigation mechanism for taking water from the River Nile to irrigate their crops. This clever device uses a bucket on a lever and a counterweight to help easily lift the water and channel it around the fields.
In order to make their shadufs, the children had to first design it using exact measurements and then they used hacksaws to cut the wood to the appropriate length. This was great fun and the children really enjoyed using the hacksaw – a real-life skill!
