On Monday 4th May 2026, it was International Firefighters’ Day. To celebrate this day, Reception were lucky enough to have a workshop with FOBBS (Figures of Black British Society) founder, Kayleigh Oliver. Kayleigh spent time working with small groups of children to celebrate how firefighters keep us safe. The children had lots to say from their learning last half of term about ‘People who help us!’ The children learned about Frank Bailey who was one of the first Black firefighters who worked in London in 1955. The children also researched Samantha Samuels who was the first Black female firefighter in 1990 in the West Midlands.
The children had the opportunity to think about the different equipment firefighters use and created their own firefighter figure. They will continue this work in small groups for the rest of this half term.
Thank you to Kayleigh for her time and knowledge. The children loved the workshop!
