As part of Black History Month, Reception have been learning about the footballer Marcus Rashford and the kind things he has done to support his community. We learnt that when Marcus was growing up, his family didn’t have much money and often struggled to have enough food to eat. But Marcus had a big dream…to become a footballer. It wasn’t easy but he was a ‘Tryasaur’ and never gave up, eventually playing for Manchester United and then for England!
Reception children enjoyed pretending to be footballers by playing ‘finger football’, which also helps to get our wrists, hands and fingers strong for writing. We then worked together, just like a football team, to create a large class picture of Marcus Rashford, each doing our little part and then piecing them together to make one big piece of art. Doesn’t it look amazing?!
We learnt that Marcus helped his community by working with a charity to provide meals so that children wouldn’t go hungry. He also created some nutritious and budget friendly recipes to help families to feed their children. Yellow and Red class became chefs this week and tried out a recipe for delicious cheese and tomato pastries. We loved learning how to cut, spread and sprinkle the ingredients but our favourite part was getting to taste them!
Did you know that Marcus Rashford was awarded an MBE for his efforts to end child poverty? In Reception, we looked at pictures of real MBE awards and made our very own medals, using our fine motor skills. We are very proud of them!
What a fantastic week we have had learning how one person can make such a difference. I wonder what difference we can make?
