As part of our topic this term, “Beastly Beasties,” the Reception children at Beulah had an unforgettable day with a special visit from Zoolab! They brought along an incredible selection of mini-beasts and even a reptile for the children to meet up close.
It was wonderful to see how brave, curious, and kind the children were as they interacted with the animals. We were especially proud of those who chose to hold the mini-beasts in their hands! One child, while holding the Giant African millipede, said: “The millipede feels tickly on my hand!”.
The children had the chance to meet a fascinating range of creatures, including a Chilean rose tarantula, an Asian Forest Scorpion, a Madagascar hissing cockroach, a Giant African millipede, a Giant African land snail, and—as a special reptile treat—a corn snake!
The children also learned lots of amazing facts about the different mini-beasts.
Did you know…
- Cockroaches have been around for over 280 million years—long before the dinosaurs! They are some of the world’s toughest survivors and can withstand running through fire and being frozen in ice.
- Tarantulas can flick tiny hairs from their bodies to protect themselves from predators.
- Scorpions glow under UV light—like a real-life science experiment!
- Giant African land snails can grow as big as a human hand and have over 10,000 tiny teeth.
It was a day full of curiosity, courage, and hands-on learning—an experience our Reception children will remember for a long time!
