ATW Reception News – Story writing and Science Week

This week in Reception, the children have been continuing their learning around our ‘Once Upon a Time’ topic.  They became fantastic authors and wrote their own stories with a beginning, middle and end.  We were so impressed with their creativity and imagination, with stories full of dragons, gingerbread men, wolves and many exciting adventures!  The children worked hard to think about story structure and used their phonics knowledge to write independently.

It has also been Science Week and the children have loved becoming scientists and carrying out lots of exciting investigations.  They learned about changes over time and began making scientific predictions before each experiment.  During our butter-making experiment, the children predicted that the cream might turn into yoghurt, ice-cream and even bread!  They also made excellent predictions when testing which items would melt at room temperature and correctly guessed that the ice and ice-cream would melt.

The cola explosion experiment was definitely a favourite!  The children predicted that adding more mentos would make the explosion shoot even higher, and they were very excited to see the results.  They also enjoyed creating a bubbling chemical reaction using vinegar and baking soda and observing what happened when the two materials were combined.

In maths and phonics, the children have been reviewing and consolidating all of the learning they have completed so far this year.  We are very proud of how hard they are working and how much confidence they are showing in their learning.
