CYP Upper: Great first week!

We have returned from our holidays full of vim, vigour and determination. We have been focusing this week on the Building Learning Power capacities of listening and empathy; we focused particularly on how empathy can help us to collaborate and also help us to think critically. We are working hard to develop skills of seeing others’ viewpoints and imagining how they may feel in given situations.

This morning, we were treated to a fantastic assembly by Beech Class.  The children shared their learning from English and thematic and gave a fantastic explanation of the different stages of mummification.  They spoke confidently and showed they had gained an excellent understanding of the process.  To celebrate “When I Grow Up Day”, we were then treated to a fantastic rendition of “When I grow Up” from Matilda.  The children sang beautifully and it was wonderful to see all their costumes.  Many thanks to Miss Prideaux, Mrs O’Connor and Miss Brewer for all your hard helping the children to prepare.

Well done to everyone who supported the “When I grow Up Day”, we have seen such amazing costumes and ambitions for the future.  Thank you to Miss Horvatova and the School Council for organising this event.  You can find out more about this event here

Well done to this week’s Word Wizard, Reggie in Hazel Class, who wrote a fantastic sentence using the word ‘impeccable’.  This week’s word is ‘velvety’.   Remember to get your entries in by Monday morning to be in  with a chance of winning.

Congratulations to our Cypress Superstars this week.  Sidiki in Sycamore Class has produced some fantastic writing using nouns and adjectives to describe a mountain range. Mikayla, Kemara and Thalia in Year 6 have been awarded medals for their achievements in gymnastics outside of school.  Keep up the great work! Sam in Rowan Class has produced a fantastic description of the eruption of Pompeii.  You can listen to his reading here.

We are all very excited for BOOK WEEK 2022!  Please click here to read the newsletter for more information.  This year our theme is WE LOVE POETRY!  Each year group has a poet coming to visit and we will be hosting assemblies and workshops to really immerse the children in poetry.  Every class will be learning a poem to perform at our Friday Poetry Slam!  Many of our visiting poets are also holding book signings after school and we also have the Scholastic Book Fair opening on Thursday 3rd March, will be based at the Upper School.  We would prefer payments to be made by cash, however there is an option to use a QR code to pay for books online.  All proceeds from book sales will support the brand new Upper School library.  World Book Day is on Thursday 3rd March and children (and staff!) are welcome to dress up as any character from their favourite book.  We can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes!  Many thanks to Mrs Parker for her hard work organising our Book Week and to our wonderful PTFA for funding our visiting authors and poets.

Every day a member of our Pegasus Leadership Team will be sharing a poem!  Please check out the website page each day to hear a new story by clicking here

Have a wonderful weekend

Ms Binks, Mrs Carpenter and the Cypress Upper Team
