Atwood Newsletter 20th March 2026

This week it really started to feel like spring in school.  The sun came out and the daffodils that the children planted back in the autumn are bursting into bloom all around the school.

The Nursery have been learning about bees and planting seeds this week.

In Reception, this week the children had a visit from a turtle and thought about keeping our oceans clean.

In Year 1 this week in English, the children have continued to write their own stories inspired by their class book ‘Chalk’.  The children used adjectives to describe what they had drawn and added story language to add detail to their story.  The children have focused on the build-up and problem part of the story.  Next week will be the solution!  At the start of the week in maths, the children continued their learning on ‘one more’ and extended this by finding one less.  The children have also moved on to measuring length using cubes and rulers.  During thematic this week, the children looked at a variety of maps and identified the features they could find e.g. a title.  They also used real compasses and used the vocabulary North, South, East and West to tell their partner what could be found at each compass direction.  In science, Year 1 have carefully thought about the joining materials they will use for their boat.  They also discussed why these materials are suitable.  Next week, the children will draw the design for their boat

This week, Year 2 have been researching London landmarks for a fact file in their English lessons.  In Maths, the children have been subtracting with exchanging tens and in their science lessons the children have planted bulbs.  They have planted them in different conditions to test their hypotheses about what will help them to grow.

To finish off the week Orange Class treated us to a class assembly showcasing all their learning about London and the Great Fire of 1666.  They shared some amazing facts and performed their own version of ‘London’s Burning’ with many off their own verses including one about ‘fetch the ketchup’!  Well done to them!

This week, Year 3 children have been enjoying the text ‘The First Drawing’. They have been writing sentences using the conjunctions so and because to extend their ideas. They have also focused on using possessive apostrophes to describe the animals painted on the cave walls in France, discovered in 1994. The children have worked hard to make their writing clear and descriptive.  In Maths, they have been learning about fractions. The children have been finding halves, quarters and tenths, as well as dividing amounts into equal parts. They have also been solving word problems, applying their understanding in different contexts.  As part of their Stone Age topic, they have been developing their geography skills. They have used a compass to locate cities within the United Kingdom and have begun comparing different locations.  In Science, the year 3 have been learning about how soil is made. The children have explored how rocks break down over time and how organic matter contributes to soil formation.

In Year 4 the children have been learning how to convert improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa in Maths.  In history, they have been discussing reasons why the Anglo-Saxons invaded Britain and looking at the push and pull factors. Year 4 have started reading Rumaysa in whole class reading which is a retelling of the classic tale of Rapunzel.  Finally, the children’s endangered animal campaign writing is progressing well and this week they have written a paragraph of information all about their chosen animal.

The highlight for Year 5 this week has been their residential trip to Carroty Wood.  The children were a credit to Atwood.  They encouraged each other through tricky challenges and were brave in trying new things.  Their behaviour throughout the trip was exemplary with many people commenting on their good manners and positive attitudes.  The children took part in high ropes, canoeing, climbing abseiling and archery and also had lots of fun playing in the woods.  Everyone had a great time making new friendships and developing their independence away from home. Huge thanks to all the staff who gave up their time (and their sleep) for the trip to happen.

After a fantastic time away at Carroty Wood, the children came back full of lots of stories to share!  They have been busy writing a recount of their time away and have loved looking at the photos from their trip.  In maths, they have worked really hard at adding mixed number fractions.  In Thematic learning, they have learnt about how propaganda was spread about witches during the Tudor times and reflected on whether the trials and punishments were fair in these cases

In English, Year 6 have been busy planning and crafting persuasive monologues in the role of Lady Macbeth, aiming to convince Macbeth to murder King Duncan. They have been developing a formal and persuasive tone, making effective use of parentheses to add extra detail and construct rhetorical questions. The children have also focused on using emotive language to strengthen their arguments and engage their audience.  In maths, the children have been learning about data handling. They have explored line graphs, developing their skills in reading and interpreting them accurately, as well as understanding how data changes over time.  Finally, in thematic learning, as part of our Ancient Greek topic, the children have been constructing timelines and learning about key events in the Ancient Greek period, helping them to understand how important moments in history fit together chronologically.

 Funky Socks

On Monday, we are inviting all the children to wear their funky socks to school in support of World Down Syndrome Day which is on 21st March.  This is an awareness raising event and there is no requirement to make a donation.  You can find out more about the day and the work of Down’s Syndrome UK, a parent led charity that supports families though their website here:

 Author Visit

On Tuesday, Atwood had a visit from the fantastic poet Joshua Seigal. Both key stages took part in separate assemblies where he read some of his poems and encouraged the children to join in with words and actions. Everyone had a lovely time. After the assemblies, Year 3 excitedly took part in class workshops. They have been studying his poetry, so it was a real treat to work with the poet in person! He encouraged the children to write their own poems with the theme of ’emotions’ and he was really impressed with their many imaginative ideas and range of interesting descriptive vocabulary. The children were really proud of their work and also delighted to have impressed them with their poems.

Street Dance

On Wednesday, this week the children in our after-school Street Dance club gave a special performance for their parents.  The children demonstrated their skills in Disco, Breakdancing, Popping and Locking and various other street dance styles.  The children were so well coordinated and did a great job remembering their routines.
