After a lovely, restful half-term break, the children have returned to Reception ready for our new Thematic unit – Our Amazing World
In phonics, the children have been hard at work mastering four new sounds: ll, ff, ss, and j. They have also tackled four new tricky words: put, pull, full, and as. They are even starting to apply their phonics knowledge to read full phrases, continuing to impress the adults with their growing reading confidence!
In Thematic learning, the children have been learning all about Diwali. They listened to the story of Rama and Sita, designed intricate mehndi patterns on hands, and crafted their own gorgeous clay Diya lamps (which they painted with colourful designs) alongside explosive firework artwork. A huge thank you to the wonderful parent visitors who came in to share their traditions, story, and culture with the children—the extra-special Diwali treats were a highlight!
In mathematics, the children have been focusing on spatial reasoning, noticing, and visualising. They explored positional and directional language—learning words such as on, under, next to, between, turn, flip, visualise, and straight along with accompanying physical gestures. They put these concepts into practice by turning, flipping, rotating, and matching dominoes and puzzle pieces as they noticed similarities and differences.
Red Class had a wonderful time at Forest School, using the natural environment to collect autumn leaves and thread them into lovely leaf necklaces.
It has been a brilliant start to Autumn 2!
