BINF- Scientist of the future!

We have celebrated Science week in Gold Class. The children enthusiastically participated in a range of experiments. The children tried to mix water and oil and to their surprise they could not do it and the oil just kept floating on top of the water. We also did the volcano experiment, which caused great excitement, but before we conducted the experiment, the children were very eager to predict what would happen when a Mentos sweet was placed inside the bottle of cola. Predictions included; “Explode!”, “It will rise up and fell on the sand!” It was a pleasure to see their surprised faces when the cola fizzled up. “It was a volcano! ” They exclaimed.

It was lovely to see how children started to engage in their own experiment, talking about it with their teachers and friends. Some children engaged by exploring things that sink or float in the water tray, others explored by using chalk in water to change its colour.
Another experiment that we carried out was to observe bread when it is stored in different conditions. The children left slices of bread in the open air uncovered and other slices stored inside plastic bags. They noticed that by the end of the first day, the texture of the bread out of the bag had changed, and it was now hard. The children continued to observe, but the changes were very small. We will have to see after the half term what happens to the bread that we left behind in the bags.

We also had a few experiments with eggs. We explore what happens to an egg when you put it in vinegar. Some predicted that “It will explode”, “It will be bad.”  At the end of the week, it felt rubbery and bouncy. Also, we beat some egg white, and we discovered that it had changed. “It is not runny anymore”, “Its foam!” were some of their observations. To our surprise, the foam was very stiff, and it didn’t drop when we put the bowl upside down!

What a fantastic way of finishing the school term! See you all back on the 1st June!
