We traded our usual desks for the vibrant landscapes of Africa, dedicating an entire day to a thematic takeover that was—quite literally—a feast for the senses.
We kicked things off with Adam, a legendary Kenyan storyteller who didn’t just tell the story of Mama Panya’s Pancakes, he cast the children as the stars, turning the classroom into a bustling village. Once the “pancakes” were served, we took notes from a professional dancer who previously performed in The Lion King theatre production. Under their expert guidance, the children learned to prowl, leap, and lion-dance across the savannah with Broadway-level flair.
The creativity continued with a visit from an established local artist, who led a mixed-media workshop inspired by the “African Water Ladies” imagery. Our young creators combined traditional patterned fabrics with bold silhouettes to produce some truly fantastic artwork that captured the grace and colour of the continent.
Of course, a school marches on its stomach, and the day culminated in a massive culinary celebration. Thanks to our wonderful parents, the children sampled a spread of traditional delicacies. From the first story to the last bite of couscous, it was an incredible day of immersive learning that proved Year 1 certainly has rhythm and a very healthy appetite!
