This week, the children continued with the topic, ‘To the Recue!’ by looking at people who keep our planet clean and pollutant free. The children looked at the book, ‘Clean Up!’. In it they saw that our oceans are not as clean as they thought they were and that the rubbish they are being filled with is harming the animals who live in them. They thought about how this made them feel and what people can do to help reduce, reuse and recycle waste. The children learned about the people who work to clean up our planet every day. On Thursday, a disaster happened in the infant hall. A turtle was swimming around in a pool of water when it got trapped under a pile of rubbish. The children helped free the turtle from the rubbish. They made sure that the rubbish was sorted so that it could be recycled and it wouldn’t go back into the oceans.
This week the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. Yusuf and Sarra’s mummies were very kind in giving up their time to come in and tell us all about how they celebrate Eid. The children learned how the sighting of the crescent moon in Mecca marks the beginning of Eid and which explained why moons are used to decorate people’s houses. They learned that people get up very early to go to special morning prayers. During the rest of the day family and friends gather together in community to share food and celebrate.
In Phonics, the children have been learning how to read words with the ‘ing’ suffix and compound words. In mathematics, the children have been introduced to the concept of doubling and have been practicing identifying doubles and not doubles. In PE, the children have continued to develop their jumping skills.
