This week Year One visited the Horniman Museum and enjoyed a workshop showing different African artefacts. They also looked around the exhibits in the museum as well as looking at the gardens and animals. In English, the children have been planning their own version of ‘The Awongalema Tree’. They picked two animals and thought of adjectives to describe them. They then acted out their story for the class. In maths, the children have begun looking at the topic of time and have been ordering the days of the week and thinking about what they do on each day of the week. In science, the children looked closely at the different parts of trees and made bark rubbings of the trees around the field. Finally, Violet class topped off the week with a lovely class assembly.
In Year Two, this week, the children have been looking at poetry by the incredible Michael Rosen. The children adapted the poem ‘Don’t’ into their own and the result of this was some very funny and great to read poems. They also began writing instructions on how to arrive at ther treasure islands for their next book, Captain Sparklebeard. In DT this week, the children created their very own sea creature sculptures out of clay and are in the process of preparing for puppets which they will be making next week! In Science, the children learned all about the importance of habitats and how a Food Chain works.
This week, Year Three have been writing diary entries in the first person in the role of Edward Tulane. In maths, the children have learnt about parallel lines, right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles. In science the children have continued looking at how plants thrive and survive. They have learnt about the difference between taproots and fibrous roots.
Year Four have been using rhetorical questions when writing a letter to one of the characters in their class reading book ‘The Boy at the back of the Class’. In maths they have been learning about different types of polygons and securing the language of shapes. They have also been reflecting shapes and looking at symmetry. The children have been looking at all the different Anglo-Saxon kings and putting them on a timeline in their thematic work and in science, the children are conducting an experiment to see what different liquids will do to an egg over the course of a week.
This week, Year Five learnt the poem ‘The British’ by Benjamin Zephaniah and have been performing it with actions. In maths, they have consolidated their work on converting measures and in their thematic work the children have been looking at bridge designs and thinking about their own designs for an upcoming DT project. In science, the children have been learning about the phases of the moon cycle.
This week, after many weeks of rehearsal and much preparation Year Six finally go to perform Oliver with a Twist’. On Tuesday and Wednesday, they wowed full houses of parents and grandparents. They standard of acting was fantastic and the singing was beautiful. There were some marvellous individual performances and solos and it was lovely to see the children having so much fun after all the work they had put it. Well done to everyone involved.
And finally…
Please can I request that people do not use the Reception outdoor learning area as a cut through when collecting or dropping. Children for KS1 and 2 classes should make their way round to their classrooms using the path alongside the field. This will allow the Reception staff to set up the area for the children to learn without risk of equipment and resources getting moved or damaged. Thank you for your cooperation.
