ATW Nursery – Transport, stories and growing

Phonics:
Our initial sound in Phonics this week has been ‘f’. Whilst playing the game ‘What’s in the box?’, the children could identify the words; fish, flamingo, foot and fan all began with the initial sound. We later moved on to ‘blend from the box’. We looked at blending phonemes to make the words: farm, foot, fan and fish. The children were asked to find objects around the nursery environment to add to our phonics table, beginning with the same initial sound.
Literacy:
Our second week of the story ‘We All Go Travelling By’ has seen us act out various transport modes. We have had ‘buses’ going beep-beep, planes soaring around the outdoor classroom, and trains chugging along. The children have been joining in with the story, finishing each section with the repeated refrain. Towards the end of the week, we started to read ‘Dig Dig Digging’ by Margaret Mayo. The children have noticed both stories end with a repeated refrain; however, in this new book, the words are slightly different: ‘They can work all day’. As we looked into different modes of transport, it sparked a conversation about our families, what transport we use and why this is. The class shared whether their parents used a van for work or went on the train. We later spoke about what jobs everyone would like to do.
Maths:
We have been revisiting positional language this week, and with the help of our class soft Piggy, the class could use our keywords ‘Under’, ‘Next to’, and ‘Between’, to describe where our piggy had gone. Once these foundations were in place and the children’s knowledge was growing, the learning continued outside and instead of using our Piggy, the class were involved in moving to different areas. Whether that was under the soft play, between the trampolines or next to our water tray.

Enhanced provision:
Forest School this week has been very colourful. Our new room and our art area needed some extra colour and therefore, the class were asked to find and paint a long chunky stick in Forest School for our artwork to hang on. The sticks look full of colour and we can’t wait to display our latest arts and crafts.
The nursery has started to create Helicopter stories. The purpose of these is for children to create and perform their stories to the class to develop and deepen their love for reading. This week, we have had 7 new stories and the class has thoroughly enjoyed watching and taking part.
We are now fully into spring which means it is the perfect time to do some planting. A group of children helped to make our seeds a perfect home, adding lots of nourishing soil, water and sunshine to help our seeds grow. Fingers crossed they bloom into a beautiful wildflower patch.

Child’s voice:
‘This week I have enjoyed’…
