This week Year 2 had the privilege of visiting Britain’s largest mosque – The Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden. We were warmly welcomed in before being given a tour of the mosque and having lots of opportunities to ask our questions. We learned that Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. At the end of Ramadan, Muslims have a celebration called Eid. We removed our shoes before entering the mosque to show respect. There are 2 separate prayer halls for men and women. This is how it has always been at the mosque. We were shown the holy book called the Qur’an and saw it translated into lots of different languages. Lots of Arabic scriptures have been hand painted on the mosque to remind Muslims of the peace of Allah. We saw the minaret – an outside feature that a mosque must have. Traditionally Muslims were called to prayer from here. Inside the mosque we saw a mihrab – an inside feature that a mosque must have. We were shown how Muslims pray and we saw a prayer mat.
