As part of Black History Month, this week reception looked at the aviator Bessie Coleman also known as ‘Brave Bessie’. Bessie was the first black female to pilot an aircraft. She always wanted to fly and after a lot of hard work and never giving up on her dream she made it! Reception loved learning her story and thinking about what it must be like to fly and how brave she was to keep trying even when people told her she couldn’t do it. The children retold the story to each other, acted out her amazing achievement of flying and thought about what dreams they have for their future. Brave Bessie’s story helped all the children see that anything is possible and they should never let anyone tell them they can’t achieve their dreams!
