ATW Making Maths fun!

In the week before our Easter break, our school came together to celebrate Maths Week.  A week full of exciting activities and challenges that encouraged all students to think outside the box and engage with mathematics in creative ways. It was a week that not only promoted mathematical thinking but also fostered teamwork, friendly competition and a love for numbers. Here’s a recap of some of the highlights from this fantastic event!

TTRS Competition: A Whole-School Challenge One of the main events of the week was the Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) competition, where students from all year groups competed to become the TTRS champions of the school. It was a fun-filled and highly competitive event with students racing against the clock to see who could answer the most times tables questions in the quickest time. The energy was high and students of all ages took part, with some truly impressive scores! Amber class placed first (taking the trophy an easter stuffy friend and some time with Peanut in class as a reward) followed by Ruby then Magenta. We also celebrated those in each class who were considered the top three most valuable players. In addition, Year One joined the fun by participating in Numbots, a platform designed to support early mathematical learning. The youngest learners showed great enthusiasm, mastering key number skills and earning well-deserved accolades for their progress throughout the week.

Maths Book Bonanza Throughout the week, every class enjoyed reading a special maths-themed book, sparking curiosity and discussions around mathematical concepts in real-world contexts. From stories that included numbers in fun and creative ways to books that challenged students to solve puzzles and problems, these books helped bring mathematics to life, demonstrating how maths is not just about equations but also about patterns, creativity, and thinking critically.

Morning Maths Challenges Each morning during Maths Week, students engaged in early morning maths challenges designed to get them thinking critically and outside the box before the school day officially began. These challenges encouraged students to approach problems from different angles, boosting their problem-solving skills and resilience. It was amazing to see students collaborating, sharing ideas, and celebrating their successes as they solved tricky puzzles and problems together.

A maths teacher carousel on maths day, in the morning of maths day the children from Nursery up to Year 6 experienced four different maths lessons with four different teachers. They moved around exploring different maths challenges and topics in different classrooms and had great fun exploring mathematical thinking.

Overall, it was a great week with lots of opportunities to really enjoy and explore maths.  Many thanks to Mrs Daulton-Swift put putting things together.
