The children have had another fantastic week of learning! In phonics, they learned four new sounds: ‘h’, ‘b’, ‘f’, and ‘l’, alongside the tricky words is, I, and the. They are continuing to build confidence with their blending skills to read short words independently. The children have also started using their ‘segmenting fingers’ helping them take their first steps into spelling CVC words. To cap off a brilliant week of reading, the class enjoyed a special visit to the school library to explore new books and were delighted to take home a new reading book to share with you at home.
In Thematic, the focus centred around the delightful rhyming story Oi Frog! by Kes Gray. The children thoroughly enjoyed the story’s humor and had great fun joining in with the repetitive, rhyming refrains. Building on the story, they worked on identifying rhyming word pairs, practiced writing CVC words, and even put their creative thinking to the test by coming up with their own silly rhyming combinations!
In maths, the focus was on comparing different sets of objects using mathematical language such as ‘more than’ and ‘fewer than’. The children engaged in practical comparing games using counters, towers, and small world toys. They were encouraged to explain their reasoning aloud, describing how they knew one group had more or fewer items than another—a wonderful way to deepen their mathematical understanding and vocabulary.
Outside, the children have been very active developing their gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. A highlight of the week was our basketball challenge, where several children showcased their shooting skills by aiming for different hoops placed at varying distances and heights to score different points.
Finally, Red Class enjoyed their very first session at Forest School this week! They learned how to explore the outdoor area safely, discussed the Forest School rules, and spent a wonderful afternoon engaging in child-led play and natural discovery under the trees. Next week, it will be Yellow Class’s turn to embark on their first Forest School session!
