ATW Nursery News – 15th May

We have been learning all about trains this week. We have read the story “train ride” a book that is all about the view from a train window. We used the book to discuss our own experiences of being on a train and what we have seen. Outside we built our own train tracks out of the wooden planks.

On Thursday, we went on a journey around the school. We took photos of our journey and used the photo to make a map. The children were then encouraged to make their own maps in their choosing time. At forest school, we made nature journey sticks. The children collected sticks and walked around the environment collecting items they liked as they went past. They then used string and sellotape to attach their items to the stick. At the end of the session, the children used their sticks to recall where they went on their journey.

The storm on Wednesday was very exciting for lots of the children! They were so amazed by ‘ice balls’ falling from the sky that they collected it all up when the storm had finished.

In maths, we have practised our counting skills. We remembered the three rules of counting; you count everything once, you say the numbers in order (1,2,3…) and the last number you say is how many. We then used our counting skills to practise some addition. We learnt that when you combine 2 groups of different amounts you get a new total.

The children who stay for lunch got to enjoy a teddy bears’ picnic in the lunch hall. A very exciting change to our normal lunch routine and great practice for next year!

Our sound of the week was ‘v’ and this included volcanoes, vets, vans and vests!
