History

Cypress has had a changing history. The Junior (Upper) site is the oldest part of the school and was built at the end of the 1930s as a primary school.

1950s – Infant School

The post war baby boom saw the need for more housing and school places so, in the 1950s, an Infant school was built on the site of an old dairy lower down the hill. We then had Cypress Infants and Cypress Juniors – two completely separate schools, each with its own Headteacher.

Both schools were two forms of entry at that time; this means two classes of 30 children in every year group from reception right up to Year 6.

Early 1990s – Nursery

In the early 1990s, a nursery was added to the Infant school. This initially offered a morning or an afternoon session each day to 52 three year old children.

Mid – 1990s to July 2017

In the mid1990s, both schools expanded to 3 forms of entry.

Recent years have seen further change and increased activity at Cypress:

  • We now offer childcare from 7:30am to 6:00pm each day from ‘Little Cypress’ right up to Year 6 and we provide childcare in the school holidays;
  • Eligible children can now start at their education at ‘Little Cypress’ from 2 years old;
  • Nursery children can now stay all day if their families want them to;
  • The schools were amalgamated to form a through primary school on the two sites under one Headteacher;
  • Major works have taken place on both sites,  to expand and improve the school facilities and better equip us to be able to accommodate the growth in pupil numbers.

The number of children we can now admit from nursery to Year 6 is 742, plus up to 48 two year olds. When full, that is 790 pupils in total.

Joining the Pegasus Academy Trust – September 2017

Central government policy at this time was to encourage the growth of Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) and Cypress Governors decided that this would be the best way for Cypress Primary to continue to work in partnership with other local schools.  Following a thorough selction process The Pegasus Academy Trust, who already ran a number of other local schools, were selected as the sponsor to work with Cypress.

Cypress Primary became an academy on 1st September 2017 and joined Pegasus on the same day.  As a primary school within the Trust the two sites were renamed ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ school sites and, though still a primary school, two joint Heads of School now run the school in partnership.
