Welcome to week 7 of Year 6 learning!

LIVE lessons

Thank you so much to all of you who joined the LIVE arithmetic session last Wednesday.  We had a staggering 73 participants!!

We know that many more of you tried to join – we’d like to apologise for the teething problems with the new technology and thank you for your patience.  Please contact your class teacher via your class blog or email yr6@pegasusacademytrust.org outlining the nature of the problem you had logging in and hopefully we can resolve the issue so that you can join the next LIVE lesson.

Do you think we can get over 100 participants this week?  That would be so exciting!!!

Our next LIVE lesson will be at 11am on Wednesday 10th June when Miss Mangroo will be having a go hosting a LIVE lesson on Science.  Please do join her for the start of our new Science topic: The Human Body.  In this first lesson you will learn all about blood.   For those of you who are unable to join the LIVE lesson, it will also be available as narrated Google slides under the Wednesday tab.

In order to access this meeting you will need to sign in to Google Meet: https://meet.google.com/.  You can do so using your .306 username followed by @gsuite.pegasusacademytrust.org.

eg: jsmith5.306@gsuite.pegasusacademytrust.org

Make sure you type this in accurately or copy and paste it!

Your password is the password you normally use with your .306 username.  These are the same as the login that you use to log into the school computers.

If you joined Mrs O’Connor live last week, you may find that you are already signed in.

You can then join a meeting using the nickname:

Year6Live

This will be the nickname that Year 6 will use for all of our LIVE lessons in the future.

We are also pleased that we have continued to speak to so many of you on the telephone – we have been greatly enjoying the tales of all the things you have been doing to keep yourselves busy during lockdown.

The Year 6 teachers have been working hard this week to create another week of fun and challenging tasks for you to get your teeth into!  As with last week, each day you will find 3 tasks which should take 45 minutes – simply click on the relevant day below.  Under the tab for each day you will find: a mathematics task; a literacy, reading or grammar task; and a task relating to thematic, science or RE and PSHE.  Don’t forget to look in the ‘Extra Activities’ tab where you will find links to fun Music, P.E. and other activities.

This week, in addition to the mathematics tasks and English tasks, we will be learning about the intriguing Cleopatra and thinking about some of the practical organisation skills required to help navigate secondary school.

TUESDAY Mathletics – Complete 3 activities set by your teacher. Grammar – Using the active and passive voice in newspapers. History – using your knowledge of Cleopatra to write, and maybe record, a radio broadcast about her.
WEDNESDAY Science – The Human Body: all about blood. Research task – World Oceans Day. TT Rockstars and times tables tasks
THURSDAY Reasoning – Ordering fractions, decimals and percentages. Writing task – Writing a newspaper report about World Oceans Day PSHE – Practical organisation for Secondary School.
FRIDAY Maths investigation – Can you use your knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages to solve the word problems and uncover the hidden message? Reading – Wolf Brother chapter 26 video and questions. Computing – We are Network Technicians!  What is the internet?

Children’s Art Week: egg box art!

This week, it is Children’s Art Week and we would like you to get creative with egg boxes.  Cardboard egg boxes are easy to work with and we hope you have one or two empty ones in your house or recycling box.  Check the Extra Activities tab for the details.

Reading

This week, we are going to be looking at newspaper stories.  Please read the text below named ‘Plastic Pollution News Story’ then have a go at answering the ‘Plastic Pollution Questions’.  Once you’ve had a go, you can check the answers in the document named ‘Plastic Pollution Answers’.

History

Cleopatra is known for being the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt.  Join Mrs Chapman here to learn more about this fascinating woman. You will find a ‘Cleopatra Top Trumps template’ below to help with your task.

 

Tuesday

Mathematics

Today, we would like you to log onto your Mathletics account and complete at least 3 activities that have been set by your teacher.

Grammar

As part of our work on newspapers this week, we are going to look at the Active and the Passive voices and how they are used to effect in newspapers.  Start with the ‘Active and Passive Voice Warmup’ below – it is best viewed as a slideshow.  Then open the powerpoint named ‘Passive Voice in News Reports’.  The powerpoint will tell you when you need to use the documents below named ‘ Active and Passive Worksheets’ and the ‘Breaking News Worksheet’.

History

Now that you are an expert on Cleopatra, you are going to use your knowledge to write and, if you can, record a radio broadcast.  Open the document below named ‘Cleopatra Using Your Research’ for more details.

Wednesday

Wednesday 10th June at 11am: LIVE science with Miss Mangroo

At 11am on Wednesday 10th June, Miss Mangroo will be hosting a LIVE science session via Google Meet.  Please join her to learn all about blood! Make sure you have a pen or pencil and paper, or a whiteboard and whiteboard pen ready – whatever you have available at home is fine.  See below for instructions on how to join.

Research task

On Monday 8th June, it was World Oceans Day.  This is a day when we reflect upon the importance of our oceans and the current damage that is being done to them.  Mrs Roberts discusses some of the issues here:

PSHE

So far, we have looked at how to build positive friendships and productive relationships with your teachers as well as planning your route to secondary school.  This week, we are going to think about the practicalities of getting yourself ready for starting secondary school and how you are going to manage all the many classes and different tasks that you will be set once you commence secondary school.  Open the powerpoint below named ‘Preparation for Secondary School’ to get started.

Friday

Mathematics investigation

This week, you are going to use all your knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages to solve a variety of word problems and find a hidden message.  Open the powerpoint below named ‘ Find the Message’ to give it a go.  You can then challenge yourself by trying to make your own hidden message word problem – don’t forget to post it on your class blog so your friends can have a go at solving it!

Please enjoy Mr Francis reading the next installment below then complete the questions below.  Once you have completed the questions you can check them against the ‘Wolf Brother Chapter 26 Answers’ below.

Computing

Why not get yourself and your family fit by finding out how many star jumps you can do in 30 seconds followed by a fun family dance routine? Open the powerpoint below named ‘PE at Home’ for more details.

If you’re feeling musical, why not visit here where you can learn beginner Notation, Ukulele, Keyboard, Recorder, make a homemade orchestra or find a song to sing.
