Year 6

Week Starting 03 May 2020

Welcome to week 3 of Year 6 learning!

Competition Time

This week, there will be a Times Tables Rock Stars Battle of the Bands!  The battle, ‘Locked Down Rocked Out!’  will commence on Monday 4th May at 9am and end on Sunday 10th May at 8pm. Go onto Times Table Rockstars – every point you earn will count towards your whole school total. The school with the most points at the end of the competition will be the winner.  You can find more details here. Why not get involved and help your school to victory?  Good luck!!!

We hope that you enjoyed the tasks that we set for you last week.  Don’t forget to share your work on your class blog – we would love to see what you have produced!  Each week, we will be posting examples of your work here, celebrating the best of the work that you have been producing at home.  Why not have a look to see if your work made it and to celebrate the work of other children?  You can also use the class blogs to contact your teacher with any questions you may have about the work.  Alternatively, you can email your work to:
yr6  We are pleased that we also managed to speak to a number of you on the telephone this week.  Please read Mr. Roberts news story about communication here.

Here are some wonderful examples of home learning from last week:

Thomas from Clydesdale class used wood from his garden to make a real Trojan Horse.  What a super independent project!

Aysha, from Oak class in Cypress, emailed us her wonderful, labelled map of Egypt.

Aysha also undertook the independent project of painting this beautiful sunset – well done Aysha!

Peyton, from Shire class, completed a detailed research project ready to write his clan animal fact file. Well done!

Sofia, from Oak class Brigstock, wishes us all a Happy Earth Day!

This excellent Earth Day poem was written by Bonnie from Beech class. Great work on the rhyming!

This informative booklet about the Ancient Egyptians was made by Esme from Beech class. The extra pyramids are brilliant!

Harrison, from Oak class Cypress, created this booklet on the Ancient Egyptians and still found time for some baking and painting. What a great way of keeping busy!

Teddy, from Shire class, also completed detailed and informative research ready to write her clan animal fact file. Great work!

The Year 6 teachers have been working hard this week to create another week of fun and challenging tasks for you to get your teeth into!  As with last week, each day you will find 3 tasks which should take 45 minutes – simply click on the relevant day below.  Under the tab for each day you will find: a mathematics task; a literacy, reading or grammar task; and a task relating to thematic, science or RE and PSHE.  Don’t forget to look in the ‘Extra Activities’ tab where you will find links to fun Music, P.E. and other activities.

On Friday 8 May 2020 Britain will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of VE Day when the guns fell silent at the end of war in Europe.  Click here to watch a short film that explains what VE Day and VJ Day were, and the events that led to the end of the war.

We want you to mark the occasion, share your pride in our country and honour the men and women of WW2 by making your own special VE Day 75 ‘Great British Bunting’ to display in your window at home.  You can use things you find at home such as paper, cereal boxes, string, ribbon, sweet wrappers, felt pens, poster paint you have or whatever else you can find.  Maybe you could decorate your bunting with pictures of whatever inspires you, whether it’s those who fought on the frontline or worked hard on the Homefront, or whether it’s a celebration of enduring peace or your own personal hero?
Click here for more information from the BBC website.
You could also have a go at some of the VE day activities in the ‘Extra Activities’ tab.
Don’t forget to post pictures of your celebratory bunting to your class blog or email it to the Year 6 team at this address:  We can’t wait to see what you create!!

Firstly, you can find the answer to last weeks maths investigation, Inside Seven Squares, below.  I hope you got it right!

Now, you can enjoy some more arithmetic with Ms Naughton’s Marvellous maths videos.

Don’t forget that you can find videos on how to complete all the calculations here.

This week, we are going to be writing animal fact files.  We would like you to read the ‘Otter Fact File’ below.  Then complete the ‘Otter Reading Comprehension’ also below.  Maybe you will find some inspiration for your clan animal fact file!  Once you have had a go at the questions you can open the ‘Otter Reading Comprehension Answers’.

This week, we are going to be researching and comparing the beliefs of the Ancient Greeks and the Ancient Egyptians.  Use the powerpoint below named ‘Ancient Greek Beliefs’, and the links given in it, to research and make notes about the beliefs of the Ancient Greeks ready for your task tomorrow.

Today, we would like you to log onto your Mathletics account and complete at least 3 activities that have been set by your teacher.

We hope that you have been enjoying our teachers readings of ‘Wolf Brother’ and have been having a go at the questions he has been posing.

Please enjoy Mr Francis reading the next installment then complete the questions below.  Once you have completed the questions you can check them against the ‘Wolf Brother Chapter 22 Answers’ below.

Today, you are going to take the research that you did yesterday, regarding the beliefs of the Ancient Greeks, and the learning you did 2 weeks ago, about the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians, and use this knowledge to compare the two civilisations in a Venn diagram.

Use the powerpoint from yesterday to remind you about the beliefs of the Ancient Greeks and  follow this link to the powerpoint about the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians

You can then use the PDF document below which outlines how to use the Venn diagram to compare the two civilisations.

Please complete at least 15 minutes on TTRockstars.  You can then find some fun 5 and 6 tables table activities below.  How well do you know your 5 and 6 times tables – you should be 100% on these by now?  Don’t forget that every point you earn goes towards helping your school’s band in the ‘Battle of the Bands’!!

Clan Animal Writing Task

Today, we would like you to take the information that you gathered last week about your chosen clan animal and the plan you created for your fact file, and write your own clan animal fact file.  See the powerpoint below named ‘Writing your fact file’ for further details about what to include.

Today, we are going to be looking at fossils – how are they formed and what can we learn from them?.  You will then create your own comic strip explaining the processes that form fossils.  Check out the powerpoint below named Year 6 – Science Fossils’.

Today’s new learning is about how to calculate the volume of a cuboid.  Learn along with Miss Naughton here:

Clan Animal Publishing Task

Having written your clan animal fact file yesterday, we would now like you to write it up for presentation.  See the powerpoint below named ‘Publishing your fact file’ for ideas of how to make it look appealing.  Don’t forget to read through your work first and make any edits necessary!

This week is all about you!!!  We would like you to think about what is important to you and what is important in a friend.  Click here to open the powerpoint named ‘All About Me’ which will take you through some activities to help you focus on yourself.  You can also create a friend avatar using the template below and play ‘Would You Rather Family Game’ (also below).
