What is School Direct?

School Direct is a new route into Initial Teacher Training that places the school based programme at the heart of the experience. The main aim of School Direct is to allow schools to recruit and select the trainees they want with the expectation that they will then go on to work within the school or group of schools in which they were trained. Why should I train with Pegasus Academy Trust?

Students who are selected to train with the Pegasus Academy Trust will join a vibrant, professional and expanding group of schools with enthusiastic, experienced staff who will support and mentor you in your journey to become a qualified teacher.  Our collegiate structure means that we can offer opportunities in a number of schools whilst ensuring consistency of experience.  We also have a close relationship with other schools in the locality and are able to facilitate wider choices where appropriate.  Furthermore, all students offered a place with the Pegasus Academy Trust are invited, if they are able, to join the Trust early and gain valuable experience in the role of a teaching assistant prior to the commencement of their teacher training in September.

What will the course give me?

There are two routes through the School Direct programme, salaried and non-salaried. Both prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching, including the teaching of all National Curriculum subjects.  Pegasus Academy Trust is recruiting up to 8 trainee teachers for 2015-16.

Non-salaried route:
For the academic year 2015-16 Pegasus Academy Trust has up to 4 vacancies for non-salaried trainees.  The non-salaried route gives you Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a full PGCE.  Student loans are available for this route.  Pegasus Academy Trust non-salaried students will receive training from the Institute of Education, a world-class research and teaching institution.  Those wishing to apply for a non-salaried place should select the Pegasus Academy Trust training programme on the UCAS website.

Salaried route:
For the academic year 2015-16 Pegasus Academy Trust has up to 6 vacancies for salaried trainees.  A salaried place means you can earn while you learn and leads to an award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).  The Pegasus Academy Trust salaried students will receive training from the Belleville Teaching School Alliance, accredited by Kingston University.  Those wishing to apply for a salaried place should select the Belleville Primary School training programme on the UCAS website.  The application will then be passed to the Pegasus Academy Trust.

How will I learn?

You will spend most of your time learning how to teach practically at one of the Pegasus Academy Trust schools.  Whichever programme you choose, throughout you will be supported by our trained school mentors and link tutors and provided with a range of experiences in a variety of school settings.

To supplement this practical experience you will have dedicated out-of-school, theory-based training delivered by the relevant training provider according to your chosen route.

How will I be assessed?

All assessment relates primarily to your school placements. There will be in depth project-based reports on school-based issues, plus the opportunity to reflect and discuss your developing subject knowledge with University and school-based tutors.  Those undertaking the PGCE route can also expect to undertake theory-based assignments.

The Schools Direct Programme will provide enhanced employment opportunities for the right participants. Schools working with The Pegasus Academy Trust would normally be expected to employ the candidate after successful completion of their course subject to vacancies and fulfilment of rigorous standards.

Whichever route you choose you have the possibility of gaining 60 credits at masters’ level, which means you can fast track to stage two of a masters’ degree, quickly progressing your professional development.

How do you select trainees?

Candidates are shortlisted in accordance with our selection criteria.  All shortlisted candidates are invited to interview.  The interview takes approximately half a day and includes a teaching activity, a panel interview and subject knowledge tests.  Candidates who are successful at this school interview are then invited to a second stage interview with the relevant training provider according to their chosen route.

What are you looking for?

We are looking for trainee teachers who are committed to ensuring primary-aged children have equal access to a high quality of education which will prepare them both for secondary school and a future life of learning and change.  Successful applicants will demonstrate the potential to set high expectations which will inspire, motivate and challenge pupils.  They will have a secure knowledge of the core primary subjects and show an enthusiasm and curiosity for learning which will enable them to embrace the wider curriculum.  Highly developed personal organisation skills are essential.  Candidates should also be reflective and show a high degree of personal and interpersonal awareness and empathy.  All successful applicants will demonstrate proficiency in the use of written and spoken English and are likely to have had meaningful experience of working with primary aged children in a paid or voluntary capacity.

What are your entry requirements?

Work experience:  Applicants for the non-salaried route should preferably have at least 2 years full-time work experience.  Applicants for the salaried route must have at least 3 years full-time work experience.  We also expect all applicants to demonstrate their commitment to primary teaching as a career and recommend a minimum of 2 weeks observation in a primary setting prior to application.
Degree:  We give preference to applicants with a first degree at a 2:1 level or above.
A-levels:  You must have 3 A-levels at grade C or above (or the equivalent).
GCSEs:  You must have a GCSE pass at grade A* to C in English language, mathematics and a science subject by the time you start the PGCE.  (Preference is given to those who already hold these qualifications, and at grade B or above.)
Skills tests:  You must also pass 2 computer-based skills tests, set by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, in numeracy and literacy prior to confirmation of your place on the programme.
References:  It is recommended that at least one reference should be from a supportive primary school (preferably an English, state primary school).

How do I apply?

All candidates should apply through the UCAS Teacher Training website.
To apply for a salaried, QTS-only place training with the Belleville Teaching School Alliance, you will need to select Belleville Primary School as the lead school (your application will then be passed on to the Pegasus Academy Trust if places are still available).
This option is listed as a London region training provider.
