Super learning in Y5

Hello everyone,

We hope you have all settled into to the new academic year, as Y5 certainly have! The staff and the children have been incredibly busy over the last few weeks, and the children have produced some brilliant work in that time 🙂

In Sycamore class, the children made a scale model of the solar system; this involved them working out that 20 million km would be represented by 1 cm. Using this information, they then used rulers and metre sticks to work out the scaled distance of each of the planets from the sun. The children had lots of fun in this activity and it really brought their science learning to life.

In Willow class, the children have been learning all about rounding. They started off by recapping their knowledge of rounding to 10, 100 and 1,000 and have now moved on to rounding to the nearest multiple of 10,000. They have really persevered in their lessons, and as a result have become more secure in their understanding of this very important skill.

Finally, in Hazel class, the children have been getting absorbed in our current Literacy text of ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ bathroom‘, where they superbly used similes and metaphors to create a ‘monster’ poem about the main character (Bradley Chalkers). They discussed the effect of these figurative language features and even performed their poems out loud – see if you can get your child to perform a small section at home!

We hope you’ve all had a wonderful September and we will post another update soon.
