The children have come come back to Cypress full of enthusiasm following the half-term break. We continue to learn about how to be reflective and strategic in our learning, and have introduced a new learning capacity this week! We have been learning all about ‘distilling’– what it means, and how this skill can help us be successful both inside and outside of the classroom. Distilling is all about looking carefully at what is being learned and pulling out the essential features and carrying them forward to aid further learning. These skills aid you to be your own learning coach and a great coach to other learners. We will continue to develop this capacity next week. Forest School for Lime class, Year 5 and some children in Year 6 started this week. So much fun was had; we can’t wait until next week! We also have had a variety of games in session on th ebottom playground during lunch, but on Thursday we were joined by a dancing coach – well done Year 3 for showing us your moves!
Sports Day
The Upper School Sports Day events will be held on the 23rd June. Year 3 and 4 will have their event in the morning and Year 5 and Year 6 in the afternoon. Please click here to see the events calendar. We know that you are keen to know whether you will be able to join us for these events. We would very much like you to be present to support your child during this time, as you will likely know, but parental attendance hinges on the government announcement expected next week in relation to the Covid restrictions and planned relaxations. We will update you on arrangements for this as soon as we can.
Book Fair – 22nd June-2nd July
We are very excited that we are able to announce we are holding a Travelling Books Book Fair this half term! We really missed having our usual Book Fair during Book Week. We have had to make a number of adaptations in order to hold the Fair in a safe way and these include:
- one year group visiting the Fair per day
- all payments placed online
The Book Fair is an ideal chance for children to see a range of new and recently published books, and enables us to promote the enjoyment and excitement of reading. There will be special offers, including a 3 books for 2 offer, and every book sold means a book for our school! There will be more information to follow. Please look out for text messages alerting you to check our website posts and downloads.
Cypress Summer Family Celebration
As you know the PTFA are organising school fair for Saturday 26th June from 3pm – 8pm. We’re going to call it the Cypress Summer Family Celebration and are finalising the schedule at the moment but there will be games / stalls earlier on, an open mike session from 3.45pm – 5.15pm and music (DJ) from 5.15pm. Tickets will be available from next week or you can purchase them on the day. Year Six will be running some stalls specifically to raise money for their leaving celebrations.
There will be an entry charge of £3.50 per child, within this price you will be able to visit the stalls and win prizes. There will be a charge for food at the BBQ/ bar, children’s tombola and also for the raffle. We hope to see you there!
Author in Residence
Mr St Aimee, teacher of Hazel class in Year 5, has recently had a book published called ‘The Constellations Above’. It is a story about the deep wonders of the sky and features a child who is a reluctant learner. He is taken on an adventure to learn about the history of the constellations above us all. Mr St Aimee read the story to us this morning during our assembly. After he read and talked about writing his book, we had lots of children inspired to write stories involving their own interests. Well done Mr St Aimee, we are very proud of you.
Cypress Superstars
Superstars this week were Eliza, Kemara, Nicole, Saxon, Leonardo (Willow) and Alesha (Birch) for earning their gold Accelerated reading certificate! Well done! What great reading mileage. I hope we give out many more before the end of the term. Well done also to Tyren who created a story map for an original tale, independently. Also well done to Dan and Lea, who won the Team Worker Gold Certificate for their kind words to others, their willingness to help their peers and for allowing other children to support them in their learning. Please see the gallery to see our Cypress Superstars!
We hope you have a great weekend.
