In year 1, we have been learning about maps and what features on a map represent. The children created a map based on the story ‘Jack and the Flum Flum Tree’. Their maps had features on them such as the Flum Flum Tree, caves and volcanoes. They then created their own key to explain what the features on their maps were. They tried to make their keys as accurate as possible by making sure their pictures on their map were exactly the same as the pictures in the key. The children also learnt about the compass directions – North, South, East and West. They then wrote exactly where the features were on their maps applying their knowledge of directions.
