WHJUN – Year 6 get close to the Dinosaurs

This week, year 6 children at WHJUN have enjoyed workshops about the discovery of the Iguanodon.  This discovery prompted great excitement in Victorian society which led to Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins (under the scientific direction of Sir Richard Owen) creating the first ever sculptures of dinosaurs – the Crystal Palace dinosaurs – as part of the Great Exhibition.  The children took part in various activities which helped them to understand how Victorian scientists made sense of the fossils that Mary Anning was finding on the Jurassic Coast and how society reacted to the discovery of these amazing creatures.
