CYP LOWER – Weekly update and Building our Learning Powers!

Building Learning Power

At Cypress Lower, as well as across the Trust in general, we have been focusing on ‘Building Learning Powers’ in our assemblies and during our school day, both inside and outside the classroom. These learning powers include independence, resilience, perseverance, determination and being open-minded. All these skills or super-powers help us become better learners; more open to challenge and willing to take risks and to learn from our mistakes. We often learn best when we find things tricky and then find ways to overcome those difficulties.

Please talk to your children over the weekend about which of their learning powers they have used this week. Every Monday, our virtual assembly focuses on a learning power and the children from each class contribute how they feel they have used that power in their learning that week, giving brilliant examples.

A wonderful example of children using their learning powers was evident in Forest School this week. The children were displaying incredible resilience, open-mindedness, determination, perseverance and independence in their learning. Even our very youngest children were open to giving new activities a go and we are very proud of them all!

Health and Safety update – QR code

We have registered Cypress Primary School with a QR code as part of the NHS Track and Trace app and you will start noticing these posters around the Lower School site.  To avoid crowds of families gathering around posters to scan the QR code, we have printed a mini version for everyone to keep which has been sent home today for you to keep in your bag, on the fridge etc.  Please scan this QR code with your NHS Covid-19 App to check-in to Cypress Primary Lower School.

Year 2 fire brigade virtual workshop

Year 2 enjoyed a virtual workshop today hosted by the London Fire Brigade.  They learnt about how firefighters help us and different equipment they have on their fire engines.  Children were taught about fire hazards around the home and how to keep themselves safe.  We are very proud of our Year 2 children for engaging so well this morning and asking lots of thoughtful questions.

Curriculum videos

Please remember to have a look at our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum videos which were published last week.  Take some time to view and read all the resources, which will explain all you need to know about the curriculum and year ahead for your child.  We have also included lots of handy tips on how you can support your child at home.  We hope you find these videos and resources useful.

Home learning and blogs

All of our classes in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 now have live blogs!  You can access blogs here and your child will need to login with their USO .306 login, which you can find on their IT passport inside their reading diaries.  We have also made a handy ‘how to’ guide to help parents, carers and children upload images and comments on their blogs.  There have seen some amazing examples of children uploading their homework this week and we have celebrated this during our virtual assembly today – well done!  For help with home learning please refer to our letter sent home at the end of September or make contact with a member of staff.

Parents’ evening next week

Next week is parents’ evening and teachers will be phoning families due to the current restrictions.  This is the first time we’ve held parents’ evening over the phone, so please bear with us!  If you have not yet returned your reply slip then make contact with your child’s class teacher to arrange an appointment.
