CYP Lower – Learning about resilience and settling into school life

We’ve had a fantastic and very busy week at CYP Lower!

It’s been great to welcome our Reception children full-time and we’re so proud of how well they’re all settling into school life.  They have been busy making friends, learning new things and getting to grips with school routines.  Every day they’re gaining more independence and getting better (and quicker!) at eating their lunch in the school hall.  We hope everyone’s enjoying their delicious lunches!  You can find the menu from Harrisons (our caterers) here.

This week Year 1 and 2 children have been learning about resilience during assembly and circle time in class.  Ask your child how they’ve shown resilience this week in their learning!  This morning we celebrated achievements during our Rainbow assembly and have introduced a ‘Word of the Week’ challenge.  Children are invited to write a sentence including the word ‘happy’ and post it in our entry box to be in the chance of winning a special ‘Word of the Week champion’ rosette during assembly next Friday.

In our assembly next Friday we will also be announcing our new School Council members!  Year 1 and 2 children are invited to stand for election next week and read out their manifestos before we vote democratically.

We have started teaching phonics across the Lower School using a new programme called ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds’.  Staff have received training and will tell families more about this during our upcoming curriculum meetings.  There are some amazing resources for parents which explain how we teach phonics, pronounce sounds and how you can help at home.  We hope everyone received their year group newsletters today (Reception to follow) and that you’ve made a note of our curriculum meeting dates:

  • Reception – Tuesday 5th October, 9am
  • Year 1 – Tuesday 28th September, 9am
  • Year 2 – Friday 1st October, 9am

We’d like to thank everyone for their patience and support at the beginning and end of day when our school site is very busy.  Please read the letter we sent out earlier this week regarding end of day collection arrangements.

Finally, we’d like to thank everyone for supporting ‘Jeans for Genes’ day in school today.  We raised over £280 for this very worthwhile charity.  Well done Cypress!  Next week we are holding an after school cake sale to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support (click here to read our letter) and hope you can help us by baking or donating cakes for us to sell.

Have a wonderful weekend.
