A busy week of learning at Cypress

On Monday in KS1 we had a special NSPCC assembly where we learnt about our children’s rights and how we can ‘Speak out Stay Safe’.  We thought about our trusted adults in school and who we could speak to if we had any worries.  During circle time in class this week, children then discussed their rights and what was important to them.  Mrs Dutton led an assembly on Tuesday teaching children about the importance of recycling.

At the Upper School, Ms Binks led an assembly about our Pegasus values and we focused on the ways we can show we are ‘Pegasus People’.  We also said farewell to Mrs Carpenter who is now on maternity leave.  The children were very excited to see some scan photos of her baby boy and are really looking forward to meeting him when she brings him to visit.  We will update you all as soon as we have any further news.

Class assemblies

Blue class assembly –  We were so proud of Blue class, who performed some incredible songs and poems to their Parents, Carers and the other Year 1 classes today.  Their theme was Winter and they shared their learning about this season, using clear speaking voices.  We were even treated to a dance routine, led by Ms Balhadere!  Thank you to Ms Balhadere, Ms Nardozza and Mrs Vethakkan for their hard work putting this assembly together. Click here to see the video of their dance and here to listen to one of their poems!

Hawthorn class assembly – Hawthorn Class treated us to a fantastic assembly all about being safe on the internet whilst using technology.  They acted out a range of scenarios where people had not behaved appropriately and explained us how it could be handled differently.  They gave us some top tips for how to respond if someone behaves in a way that makes us feel unsafe.  Well done to Hawthorn Class and Mr Shipley for such a fantastic, informative assembly

Cypress superstars

Lower School – Well done to all the children who received Rainbow certificates today, we are so proud of you all!  Green class have created some fantastic posters based on recycling after reading ‘Michael Recycle’ by Ellie Bethel.  Abdur and Kane from Year 1 have been writing about the importance of recycling, using their sounds clearly in their writing.  Freddy and Alfie from Blue class shared their recycling poster this week, with important messages about how we could protect our planet and keep animals safe.  Marcel in Ruby class has worked really hard on multiplication and division calculations this week, challenging himself to answer word problems – great focus and perseverance, Marcel!

Upper School – Congratulations to Ray in Lime Class who had a successful try out to play for Selsdon FC.  Bonnie from Holly Class visited the office this week to show her fantastic model of the flower museum based on the Great Exhibition.  The range of different galleries and even miniature visitors was wonderful to see.  You will be able to see this on display as part of our Museum Day.  Congratulations to Hazel in Birch Class who came to show me her strategies she had put together to help her learn each of her multiplication tables.  The patterns she noticed had really helped her.  Maxwell came to see me this morning as he had been chosen as player of the week in Year 4 Cricket lessons.  He has been awarded a medal as he was noticed for his batting skills. What a star!

Makaton sign of the week

Last week we launched our Makaton sign of the week at the Lower School.  Click here to learn more about Makaton!  This week our sign is white.  Please ask your child to show you this sign, or click this link for a video.

Word of the week

Well done to Betty and Elias at the Lower School for winning a Word of the Week rosette for using ‘gentle’ in a great sentence.  Next week our word is care.  This week’s word wizard at the Upper was Sofian in Holly class who wrote a fantastic sentence using the word ‘pokey’.  This week’s word is ‘hectic’.  Please post your sentences in the box by Monday morning to be in with chance of winning the rosette.

Staffing update – Cypress Upper

We will sadly be saying goodbye to Miss Brewer, one of our Teaching Assistants at the Upper site, on Friday 10th February.  Miss Brewer is leaving us to pursue her ambition of being a teacher and is taking on a role as a HLTA in a school in Central London.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Brewer for all her hard work and dedication to the children and families at Cypress and wish her all the best in her new role.

Have a lovely weekend!

Mrs Sorensen, Ms Binks and the Cypress Team
